Litecoin’s Official X Account Briefly Compromised to Promote Fake Token
Fake token scam targets Litecoin's X account
Litecoin’s official X (formerly Twitter) account was briefly hacked on January 11, with hackers promoting a fake Litecoin token on the Solana blockchain. The fraudulent post, riddled with grammatical errors, shared a contract address and a scam link to deceive users into engaging with the bogus token. The Litecoin team quickly regained control, confirming the breach occurred through a compromised delegated account, which has since been removed.
This incident highlights a troubling trend of high-profile account hacks on X. Recent months have seen an uptick in such breaches, with hackers using verified accounts to push phishing links and fake token promotions, risking users’ funds and sensitive data.
For example, the X account of EigenLayer, a restaking protocol, was hijacked on October 18, leading to posts promoting a fake “Season 2 Stakedrop” campaign. The hacker falsely claimed the campaign distributed reallocated EIGEN tokens before the EigenLayer team restored access.
Similarly, rapper Wiz Khalifa’s account was compromised on November 3 to advertise a counterfeit memecoin called WIZ, falsely linked to the artist. The Cardano Foundation suffered a similar attack on December 8, with hackers promoting “ADAsol,” a fake token exploiting false claims of regulatory issues. The scam generated $500,000 in trading volume before collapsing.
Even industry leaders have been targeted. Yat Siu, co-founder of Web3 giant Animoca Brands, saw his account hacked on December 26 to promote a fraudulent memecoin bearing his company’s name.
These incidents underline the critical need for stronger cybersecurity measures on social media platforms to combat the surge in hacks threatening the crypto community.
